So you thought grey was grim, negative and not worth consideration.
Think again.
My darkroom art can be classed as black and white, but…
There are many shades of black and white and many colours in between - between black and white, grey is the universal symbol of neutrality, practicality and objectivity and can have the positive connotations of reliability, maturity and intellect.
It has been found to be calming, timeless and warm - shades of grey can create a feeling of comfort and coziness.
Fibre based darkroom papers are available in different tones - warm tone, neutral and cool tone. My signature paper is warm tone for my work - I feel that it invites the viewer to slow down, contemplate the piece and find joy in doing so. Warm shades of grey can create a feeling of comfort and coziness in a space or interior. Warmer greys tend to communicate comfort, while cooler greys can convey a more serious tone.
Whilst talking about black and white prints, you can control the nuances of black and white when making your print.
This print is made on a warm tone fibre based paper and the black background is rendered a warm velvety charcoal colour that is delicate are giving.
